Sunland gungo peas (also known as pigeon peas) are a staple protein in Caribbean cuisine. The gungo pea is a round legume that is a key ingredient in the Jamaican dish, rice and peas, gungo peas soup my favourite.

Rice and peas is a dish traditionally eaten on Sundays, when the cooking starts early in the morning. rice is mixed with gungo peas, onion, thyme, escallion for seasoning, gratered coconut or coconut creamed , pimento berries and scotch bonnet pepper, resulting in a fluffy, flavourful side to serve alongside your choice of Meat.

Gungo peas need to be soaked and cooked before eating. They have a unique nutty flavour and crisp texture.
